Weatherization

Helping People. Changing Lives.

Make Your Home Safer, More Comfortable, and More Energy Efficient

High utility bills can place a heavy burden on families, especially during the hottest and coldest months of the year. Our Weatherization Assistance Program helps eligible households reduce energy costs by improving the efficiency, safety, and comfort of the home — at no cost to qualified applicants.

Through this program, trained inspectors and certified crews evaluate the home and identify cost-effective improvements that can help lower heating and cooling expenses over time. The goal is to reduce energy waste, improve indoor comfort, and create a safer living environment for your household.

Eligibility

Households at or below 200% of the federal poverty level may be eligible for weatherization assistance.

Priority is often given to:

  • older adults
  • individuals with disabilities
  • households with children
  • families with high energy burdens
  • homes with significant heating or cooling inefficiencies

Both homeowners and eligible renters may apply.

What Weatherization May Include

Depending on the needs of the home, services may include:

  • attic, wall, or floor insulation
  • caulking and weather-stripping around doors and windows
  • air sealing to reduce drafts and heat loss
  • duct sealing and insulation
  • heating system inspection, repair, or replacement
  • smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors
  • health and safety checks
  • energy-saving lighting and efficiency upgrades

Not every home will receive the same services. Each home is evaluated individually to determine which improvements will provide the greatest long-term benefit.

What to Expect

After your application is approved, your household may be placed on a waiting list based on demand and priority needs.

Once scheduled, a trained evaluator will perform a home energy assessment to determine which improvements are most cost-effective for your home. Recommended work is then completed by qualified technicians and contractors.

Because demand is high, wait times may vary.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) is the nation’s largest residential energy efficiency program. WAP enables low-income families to lower their energy bills by making their homes more energy efficient. Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC) received funding for WAP through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services’ Low Income Heating Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

The WAP is delivered to individuals across the state by Community Action Kentucky’s 22 local Community Action Agencies. – kyhousing.org
