Established in 1965, Head Start promotes school readiness for children, ages three to five, in low-income families by offering educational, nutritional, health, social and other services. Head Start programs promote school readiness by enhancing the social and cognitive development of children through the provision of educational, health, nutritional, social and other services to enrolled children and families. Programs actively engage parents in their children’s learning and help them in making progress toward their educational, literacy and employment goals.

Significant emphasis is placed on the involvement of parents in the administration of local Head Start programs. Lake Cumberland Head Start operates a Full-Day Program funded by an annual grant from the Department of Health and Human Services/Administration for Children & Families. (http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/hsb/).  Lake Cumberland Head Start is a comprehensive child development program that serves income-eligible 3- & 4-year-old children and their families. There are nineteen (19) centers and forty-one (41) classrooms. Lake Cumberland Head Start also operates a Home Base Program in five (5) counties.

Children attend school Monday through Thursday from approximately 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Head Start follows the local county school calendar and does not have classes during inclement weather. Transportation is available, but limited to certain areas. For more transportation information, contact the center nearest you.   Head Start welcomes children with disabilities; eighteen percent (18%) to twenty-two (22%) of total enrollment are children with disabilities.

Members of the Head Start faculty hold degrees in Early Childhood Education. The daily curriculum supports and enriches the child’s developmental growth physically, socially, emotionally, and intellectually. The Head Start curriculum focuses not only on developing social skills, but on academics as well. Head Start incorporates all areas of a child’s development into fun learning activities. Head Start staff is dedicated to enriching the lives of all students as we work toward kindergarten readiness.  The LCCAA Head Start program’s curriculum, assessment tool, school readiness plan are in alignment with the Head Start Child Development & Early Learning framework and the Kentucky Early Childhood Standards.
